Manipuri Dance

A couple of days back, I had the good fortune of watching Manipuri dance. It is one of the many art-forms that belong to India. It was arranged as a part of the many activities of a club called the SPIC-MACAY in our college. At first, when I saw the posters, I thought I would not go and instead would stay back and complete at least a portion of the very large amount of backlog I was having. But after a sir of mine suggested that I watch the programme, I decided to attend it.

Darshana Javeri

The artists were students of Padmashree Darshana Javeri. She is one of the four famous Javeri sisters and has given performances world-wide. The art forms has its origin from the North-East Indian state of Manipur. The performances are mainly centered around Radha-Krishna tales particularly the Rasalila. There is one person who sings songs to the tune of which the artists dance. There is also a drummer who plays a percussion instrument called the pung(the Manipuri Mridang). The other musical instruments used are the cymbal and the pena which is a wind instrument like the flute. The artists do not wear anklets unlike the other dance form’s performers. The facial expressions and feet movements are never too extreme. They are always very subtle.

Darshana Jhaveri did not perform much. It was mainly her students who performed. She was playing the cymbals. But there was this one act that she enacted out. The theme of the play was something to this effect. Radha was asking Krishna to leave because she knew that he had got married while he was away. Radha was the main character of the play. She enacted the play so gracefully and with so much feeling. It was undoubtedly the performance that stood out during the whole show. In spite of the age she seemed like a youngster while performing. It was as if she was Radha who was experiencing the pain while sending away Krishna.

If you get an opportunity to watch Manipuri dance, do not lose it !

Amma’s 58th Birthday

On the 27th of September every year, we celebrate Mata Amritanandamayi Devi’s birthday. She is also commonly and called AMMA(meaning mother in Malayalam). The devotees have given her the name out of love and devotion. She is the founder of all institutions under the Amrita University. She is a spiritual figure in India and is known world – wide.

Amma was born on the 27th of September, 1953. Her actual name is Sudhamani Idamannel in a small fisherman’s house in Parayakadavu, in Kollam District in Kerala, India. Her father’s name is Sukumaran and Her mother’s name is . Even as a child she used to be extraordinary and very spiritual. She used to be very kind to the animals around and give them food. She used to involve herself in meditation and chanting mantras and sing bhajans in the name of the Lord. Her parents and relatives never understood this why She was doing this and hence always scolded her for doing that. But Amma ignored all this continued doing what she was doing. Amma used to even spend sleepless nights doing meditation and just looking up at the sky, wondering why some people should suffer ? Why should they and starve ? She used to be compassionate to all living beings.

Mata Amritanandamayi (Amma)

Anyway, if you start talking about Amma, you can go on forever. Coming back to the present…

Devotees all over the world come to Amritapuri to celebrate  Amma’s birthday and to get Her darshan on this day. It’s not that they  do not come on the other days, but on this day, the ashram(there is one at Amritapuri where Amma resides )is extremely crowded. Three days before Her birthday, service begins and all students of the Amritapuri campus are expected to stay at the ashram during the three days and do service to the guests who come. Since there are thousands of people who come every year, there is the need for volunteers to do jobs like washing plates, playing the role  of security for three nights, helping out old people  through the crowd, controlling the people standing in queue to see Amma, that is for darshan, and so on.

Every year, the first  years of every college (there are about 4 colleges here, at Amritapuri, belonging to the Amrita University) are made to stay back compulsorily during this period. It is optional for the seniors. When I was in the first year , I was very  sad that  I would have to stay back for three days doing nothing but walking about doing stuff that I have never been made to do even at home. But finally, since I did not have any other option, I stayed back and to my surprise I found it very memorable experience. Thus this year, being my second year, I have the right to make my decision, whether I want to stay at the ashram, to do service and I have decided that I am going to stay and serve the others to the best of my ability.

Pizza on Space !!!

As a part of the competition between the world’s two best Pizza sellers – Dominos and Pizza Hut, the former has decided to open a unit of its company in Moon. Yes, you heard it right! The exact date and month have not been specified but full on planning has started.

It all started in 2001, with Pizza Hut making a parcel for the crew of International Space Station. That was officially the first delivery  of pizzas to space. Recently, Dominos asked a firm Maeda Corp to draw up plans for opening a restaurant on the surface of Moon. It has been estimated that a total of fifteen rocket trips may be required to transfer all the materials required to open a unit on the rugged surface of Moon.

Dominos plans to open the first Pizza restaurant on Moon

The staff required to handle the unit will be asked to stay there on Moon permanently. It may not be as bad as you think especially since there is going to be a huge recreational area inside the complex. What ever ingredient is required would have to be grown by the employees in the state of art gardens. Customers can either choose to come in to the restaurant and have their meal or have space – suit clad delivery boys deliver it to them.

This unit on the Moon is being planned under the assumption that after a few years, humans may start living on the Moon.

Isn’t the idea awesome ? Please feel free to express your opinion.
